Cornish Rex 101

Mes amis, you may not know this about me, but I am a Brown Patched Tabby Cornish Rex. Brown Patched Tabby's have black markings on a brownish base with red tabby patches or swirls. I found some magnifique information about my breed on www.vetstreet.com and thought I would share it with you. Where it says "his" just replace with "her". Et voila!

The Cornish Rex isn’t the victim of a hair stylist experimenting with permanent wave solution. His soft, short, wavy coat is the product of a spontaneous natural mutation, a not uncommon occurrence in the world of cats. The first known Cornish Rex, named for his coat’s resemblance to that of a rex rabbit, made his appearance in Cornwall in 1950. It’s not only his coat that distinguishes the Cornish Rex. He has an egg-shaped head topped with large ears, big eyes, curly whiskers, and unusually long hind legs.

You just know that a cat who looks like this has a sense of humor, and you can expect that he will exercise it at your expense. The Cornish Rex is a highly intelligent, highly active cat who loves to be involved in everything you’re doing: he will climb to the highest point in the house to survey his domain, steal food to fuel his antics, and play fetch — anything, really, that will bring him attention and applause. He can learn just about anything you can teach, although you may find that he is a better trainer of you than you are of him. He’s always on the go, so don’t think that you are acquiring a sweet, quiet lap sitter when you bring the Rex home. This is a cat who speaks his mind. He might not speak English, but he definitely knows how to get his point across with a glance, gesture, or vocal riposte.

With his playful, outgoing nature, the Cornish Rex is a good choice for families with children, other pets, or frequent guests. He is a good traveler and makes an excellent therapy cat.

You may hear that the Cornish Rex coat is hypoallergenic because of its texture, but that is not correct. Allergies are not caused by a particular coat type but by dander, the dead skin cells that are shed by all cats (and people, for that matter). There is no scientific evidence that any breed or crossbreed is more or less allergenic than any other cat. Some people with allergies react less severely to particular cats, but no reputable breeder will guarantee that her cats are hypoallergenic.

The Cornish Rex is well suited to any home with people who will love him, play with him and give him the attention he seeks. Keep him indoors to protect him from sunburn, cars, diseases spread by other cats, and attacks from other animals.

Other Quick Facts

  • The Cornish Rex looks sleek, but when you pick him up he is surprisingly heavy.
  • His body temperature is the same as that of any other cat, but because of his light coat, he feels especially warm to the touch.
  • The Cornish Rex has a head that is about one-third longer than it is wide.

Cats in Hats

Carol Anne Kendall, the designer behind ZK Hat Couture and creator of most of my fabulous hats....

What inspired you to start designing hats for cats? ZK Hat Couture started out as ZK Cat Couture in 1996 when my black cat Zeus Kendall (aka ZK) purred loudly when my sister put a fleece collar on him that she had made for her Chinese Crested dogs. She was starting to do dog clothes and we played around with fleece hats to match. Zeus enjoyed the attention and I dressed him up with the dog clothes and hats, even though he was a boy cat. I realized that dogs had clothes but there wasn't anything for cats. There was absolutely no one doing hats for pets at that time either.

What style best suits cats? It can vary due to breed and size. Cats can wear a wide range and variety of hats. ZK Hat Couture styles come in all sizes and colors.

Cats are notoriously uncooperative. How do you make sure they keep their headgear on? The ZK Hats come with double invisible elastics that stretch and work very well to hold the hat on their head.  One elastic goes in front of the ears and one goes behind the ears to fit purrrfectly.

Describe moi as a client You were one of our first and favorite friends. You are so beautiful and could model and walk on a leash and keep up with the dogs on the runway. You are one of a kind and have a definite sense of style.

Merci! Which hat suits me the bestThe favorite ZK Hat for you is the ZK "Showgirl". It starts out as a basic pillbox style and is built up with tulle, feathers, floral and many types of decor to match your favorite outfits.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your pieces? My inspiration come from many places. I follow the top designers and watch the current runway shows and what is in Vogue. I am fascinated by the hats worn in the past and pull ideas from famous women and actresses. Sometimes I just get an idea that comes to me and it pushes me to create a special hat.

Of the hats featured in my book, which is your favorite? The cover shows one of my favorite colors and I love to work with feathers. The ZK Hat Couture made to match your black lace dress was a very couture look. The ZK "Pink Confection" hat is so feminine and sweet on you, and the ZK "Ultimate Couture" with beading that you share with Mia is also one of my favorites. I was inspired to do animal prints at that time. I love how it is so beautiful with her fur coloring.

How much do your hats retail for and where can one purchase them from? ZK Hat Couture has a wide range of pricing depending on the style of the hat and how much is put into it.  A basic ZK Hat can be $38 and go up to just under $100. You can purchase and special order your ZK Hat Couture by e-mail at zkhats@gmail.com  The ZK Hat Couture site at http://www.zkhatcouture.com can help you with ideas

It's National Cat Day in the United States today and even a chic pussycat like moi isn't immune to cute photographs of kittens. So when I saw this hilarious post by one of my favorite blogs documenting kitties who didn't know that today is their special day, I had to share...

Purrfect Poetry

I have been so busy pawtographing copies of my book The Adventures of Coco Le Chat and giving interviews. Yesterday a journalist asked me what one book is always beside my bed and I just had to share. A few years ago, a handsome Tomcat-who-shall-remain-nameless sent me a book of poems called I Could Pee On This. Mon Dieu! It was so me.

My favorite poem? "Closed Door." It reminds me of all the hype around fashion events.

Let me know what you think...

CLOSED DOOR

LET ME IN LET ME IN LET ME IN

LET ME IN LET ME IN LET ME IN

LET ME IN LET ME IN LET ME IN

LET ME IN LET ME IN LET ME IN

LET ME IN LET ME I--

Oh, uh, hello

I did not expect an answer

I did not expect an entrance

I did not expect this room to be

  so unbelievably dull

So, uh, goodbye

Cat-toos!

Très chic, non?

I am quite a snob when it comes to tattoos. And, being as influenced by fashion as I am, I'm not sure I would be able to commit to anything too permanent. What would I do if the aesthetic became dated? Quelle horreur! So when I spotted Meri Meri's two stylish kitties finished with transferable gold foil I was sold. The best $1.95 I've ever spent!
